Wireless carrier Sprint and Samsung Mobile recently announced that the Samsung Moment handset would be showcased at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with North American mobile digital TV broadcasting features. The handset will use Samsung’s Mobile DTV Chip (the first single-chip solution in the world supporting Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) new Mobile Digital TV standard) to receive live digital TV from local broadcast stations, the two companies also revealed.

At the same time, the duo stated that the Mobile DTV-equipped Samsung Moment would be showcased in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore markets during the first three months of the ongoing year, and that it was the first ever consumer demonstration of the technology. Samsung also added that it was the co-developer of the ATSC standard, which is meant to enable mobile digital TV broadcasting on mobile phones, laptops, USB drives and other products. The technology is being demoed on Moment due to the handset's 3.2-inch AMOLED display screen, the maker further mentioned.

“The selection of Samsung Moment as the first trial handset for mobile digital TV in the U.S. is an enormous honor for Samsung Mobile,” said Omar Khan, chief strategy officer for Samsung Mobile. “It is incredibly rewarding to see one of Samsung Mobile’s flagship devices be integrated with the Samsung ATSC Mobile DTV chip that’s giving the power and potential of free, live mobile digital TV to our U.S. customers.” A video demo of the Mobile DTV-enabled Moment is available below, courtesy of Engadget. Samsung Moment has been delivered to the US market back in November 2009, and is the first handset from the South Korean maker to sport Google's Android operating system. The handset includes an 800 MHz processor, a full QWERTY keyboard that enables fast messaging, built-in Google mobile services, such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube, and it also comes with access to a wide range of applications via the Android Market.

“Samsung Moment is already a customer favorite with its integrated and innovative Android platform so we are very excited to be able to offer it with the Samsung’s Mobile Digital TV chip to customers in the Washington and Baltimore areas,” said Fared Adib, Sprint vice president of product development. “It is truly an amazing experience to watch local and network television on Moment with the benefit of its dynamic screen. This trial is a great opportunity for Sprint customers.”
