14 DAY TRIAL // South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics announced today officially the introduction on the market of its first 12-megapixel camera phone that sports 3x optical zoom lens, the Samsung AMOLED 12M (aka SCH-W880). According to the company, the new handset is set to come to the market in Korea in early October, and no details on a possible availability outside the country have been unveiled.
The new 12-megapixel camera phone was announced only three months after the company's Pixon 12, its first such behemoth, became official. The Samsung AMOLED 12M comes with the latest advancements in the camera technology field, as well as with a 3.3-inch AMOLED full-touch display that boasts a WVGA 800 x 480 pixel resolution.
The phone's 3x optical zoom is the fist one available within a 12-megapixel camera phone, and should provide users with the possibility to take great shots even at long distances. Moreover, the device also sports a 2x digital zoom, which enables even more far close-ups. Other specific features are also present with the device, such as Touch Auto-Focus (AF), a Smart Auto feature, Xenon flash, shake reduction, face recognition, a rapid image saving feature (2 seconds) or high-quality video recording functionality, 1280 x 720-pixel at 30 frames per second.
“Samsung has led the camera phone market by introducing many landmark models – the first 5-megapixel camera phone (SCH-V7800, June 2005), the first 7-megapixel device with an optical zoom (SCH-V770, July 2005), the first 10-megapixel model (SCH-B600, October 2006) and, most recently, the first 12-megapixel camera phone for the global market (Samsung Pixon12, June 2009),” said JK Shin, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Communication Division, Samsung Electronics. “The Samsung AMOLED 12M is another landmark and proof of our continuing commitment to providing the most advanced technology to enrich users’ mobile experience.”
Other specs of the new handset also include Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 HS (micro USB) connectivity, support for WCDMA (2100 MHz), GSM(900), DCS(1800), PCS(1900) Roaming, DMB (Mobile TV), 4GB of internal memory, a MicroSD memory card slot with support for 32GB of additional storage space, and a 1,100 mAh battery. The new Samsung AMOLED 12M measures 115.8 x 56.9 x 16.3 mm. No details on its pricing have been unveiled so far.
