O2 is the second major UK-based carrier announcing the Galaxy W Android smartphone, after Three UK confirmed the release of the device in late August.

The operator already listed the phone on its “Coming Soon” page, but has yet to announce the exact released date, along with the phone's price options.

For those who are not yet aware, Softpedia already had the chance to spend some time with the Galaxy W while it was showcased at IFA 2011 trade fair, in Berlin.

One could say that the Galaxy W is the smaller brother of the Galaxy S Plus, which was launched on the market several months ago.

However, being small does not mean less power or features, as the Galaxy W will be delivered with the same hardware configuration as the Galaxy S Plus, but in a smaller case.

Samsung Galaxy W has a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors support and 480 x 800 pixels resolution, whereas the Galaxy S Plus comes with a slightly larger 4.0-inch display with the same technical features.

In addition, the Galaxy W's 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery is a bit smaller in comparison with Galaxy S Plus 1650 mAh battery, but it will be interesting to see the former's official numbers before making any evaluations on the phone's autonomy.

Also known as Galaxy Wonder, the smartphone is powered by Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) mobile platform and packs 512 MB of RAM, 2 GB ROM, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

As the manufacturer states, the phone provides “access to over 250,000 apps through Android market place it features Samsung value added features such as Social Hub, Music Hub and Allshare.”

Just like its Galaxy S Plus predecessor, the Galaxy W is equipped with a single core 1.4GHz MSM8255T Snapdragon processor manufactured by Qualcomm and an Adreno 205 graphics processing unit.
