Australian mobile phone users have now the possibility to enjoy a new high-end Android-based mobile phone in their country, namely the Samsung Galaxy S II, which went for sale at wireless carrier Optus at the beginning of June.

The new handset is Samsung's latest flagship Android device, unveiled to the world back in February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and put on shelves in late April with upgraded hardware inside.

The mobile phone was made available for pre-order via Optus a few weeks ago, and now it is available for purchase through the carrier's website, as well as in stores.

Optus put the Samsung Galaxy S II for sale at $23 per month on the $19 Optus Cap, with a total minimum cost of $970 over 24 months, but also on other monthly plans.

For example, it goes for $0 upfront on the $79 Optus Cap, with a total minimum cost of $1,738 over 24 months, as well as on the $99 Timeless Extreme and $129 Timeless Extreme plans.

The phone is available for the carrier's business customers as well, priced starting at $20 per month on the $29 Optus Cap, with a total minimum cost of $1089 over 24 months.

The handset has a lot to offer, starting with a slim design and a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display, and going all the way to its fast dual-core 1.2GHz application processor.

The Galaxy S II is Samsung's new successor to the original acclaimed Galaxy S. It is also one of the first AndroidTM mobile phones to bring users the latest version of the Google Android mobile phone operating system (Gingerbread 2.3),” Optus explains.

“The Samsung Galaxy S II is slimmer and lighter, and yet much more powerful. It has a much improved and wider display coupled with a more powerful application processor and higher data transfer speeds.”

The specs list of the new device would also include an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for full HD video recording, and a front-facing camera for video calling. The Samsung Galaxy S II also comes with 16GB of internal memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot for additional storage space. It comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and HSPA+ connectivity capabilities, GPS receiver, and a 1,650mAh battery packed inside, as well.

The handset is available for purchase on Optus' website here for customers, and here for the carrier's business users.
