Corning Incorporated, one of the world leaders in specialty glass and ceramics, announced recently that Samsung Galaxy S will be protected by its Corning Gorilla glass, which was especially designed for this hot on sale premium smartphone.

The new deal between the two companies enforces Samsung Galaxy S highly durable design, with its four-inch super AMOLED display.

Further, the enhanced super AMOLED display is enabled in part by using Corning Gorilla glass as the protective cover.

BJ Kang, senior manager of Samsung Electronics said, “Advanced display technology plays a crucial role in meeting consumers’ growing expectations on high-end mobile devices, especially smartphones. Corning’s Gorilla glass has helped maximize Galaxy S’s unique smartphone features by enabling a high-quality touch display.”

Corning’s Gorilla glass is a high-strength alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass used as a protective cover glass for high-end display devices such as notebook PCs, televisions, and mobile phones.

It was initially invented in 1962, but it did not find commercial applications until 2008. Gorilla glass is environmentally friendly, scratch resistant and durable.

Haeng Hee Lee, president of Corning Korea Company Ltd added, “Device makers are challenged with designing stylish yet durable products. The Galaxy S is a fine example of a premium device created through the combination of Corning’s specialty glass and Samsung’s mobile display technologies.”

“Corning’s Gorilla glass enables device makers to introduce durable display products with innovative designs,” Lee added.

Corning Incorporated stated that more than 20 major makers of PC and handheld devices have already recognized the benefits of Gorilla glass by designing it into more than 225 devices.

Moreover, in addition to its uses for mobile phones such as the Motorola Droid X and Dell Streak, the company expects increasing usage in television screens starting in 2011, with a projected market of $1 billion in 2011.
