A new Android-based mobile phone was made available for purchase in Australia on the airwaves of wireless carrier Optus, namely the Samsung Galaxy 580. The new device, reportedly a version of the Galaxy 5 available on Telstra, slipped rather unnoticed to Optus' offering, it seems.

Users interested in the purchase of this device would be able to get it for $0 upfront upon the signing of a 24 months contract with Optus, on the carrier's $49 cap. The handset was also included in the carrier's offering on the $19 cap with $5 monthly repayments.

As the guys over at Ausdroid note, Optus launched the new Android-based mobile phone in a very quiet manner, though the device still seems like an appealing option (the Galaxy 5 was put on sale at Telstra on pre-pay with a price tag of $199 attached to it.

The specifications list of this device are also pretty appealing, with that 3.2" 16M Colour TFT touchscreen Display (240 x 400 pixel resolution), and with a 3-megapixel photo snapper with Auto Focus on the back, and with QVGA video recording capabilities.

The new Samsung Galaxy 580 also sports EDGE/GPRS (850/900/1800/1900) and HSDPA 3.6Mbps (900/2100) connectivity options, as well as Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0, and WiFi b/g/n capabilities.

The new mobile phone packs 170Mb of internal memory, complemented by a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space (a 1GB card included in the package).

The handset also sports Email, MMS, SMS capabilities, along with HTML browser, and with multimedia capabilities, with support for MP3 / AAC / AAC+ / eAAC+ / WMA / AMR-NB / AMR-WB / MIDI and H.264, H.263, MPEG4, Divx, WMV files.

Among the other features included into the mix, we can count FM Radio, Voice Dialler, Swype text input, access to Samsung Apps, as well as A-GPS with support for Google Maps.

Samsung Galaxy 580 measures 113.5 x 55 x 12.4mm and weighs in at 113g. It packs a battery that can offer up to 250 minutes of talk time, or up to 330 hours of talk time.
