Mobile phone carrier Vodafone Australia has just announced that it plans on making the Android 2.1 software update available for its Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 users sometime in late December.

For the time being, however, the carrier did not offer specific info on when exactly the solution will be released, nor on the reasons for which is was pushed to such a late date.

SE X10 and X10 MP Upgrade to Eclair (Android 2.1) is hoping to be released late December. Will update when we know more,” a recent tweet from the wireless carrier notes (via ausdroid).

Sony Ericson already started the deployment off this software update for its Xperia X10 users around the world, first providing it to unlocked devices, and then moving to carrier branded phones too.

However, while the solution was delayed a few times before, it appears that some carriers have pushed it back even more, Vodafone Australia included.

Hopefully, no other delays would emerge in the meantime, and all Xperia X10 and Xperia X10 mini pro users on the carrier's network would get the solution before the end of the ongoing year. Earlier this week, Sony Ericsson announced the release of this solution on the Australian market, but not for users at Optus, Telstra & VHA, for the Xperia X10, while the owners of Xperia X10 mini pro on Telstra & VHA were left out of the roll-out too.

There should be a nice range of enhancements included with the software update, as Sony Ericsson pointed-out a few times before:

- HD video recording, 720p MPEG-4 - Send files via Bluetooth - New additional applications will be available in Market - New Backup and restore application - Multiple Google accounts - Quick contacts - Live wallpapers - Five wallpaper/standby screens - Improved screen lock - Timescape is updated and improved

As stated above, it remains to be seen whether Vodafone will manage to provide its Xperia X10 users with the update in due time, so stay tuned for more info on the matter.
