Just as promised, wireless carrier Sprint released a software update for the high-end Samsung Epic 4G smartphone on its airwaves, in an attempt to fix some issues that users reported on, including the phone's 3G upload speeds being capped at around 150Kb/s.

The new firmware update, available over the air as software version S:D700.0.5S.DI18, also packs a series of other fixes inside, the release notes unveil.

Among these fixes, we can count:

- WiFi standby battery drain - Amazon MP3 cannot download in 4G - Large emails lag in upload speeds - Increased 3G upload speeds

According to Sprint, the update is a recommended one, and it would be automatically downloaded to the handset as soon as it is available.

The firmware update should take around 7 or 8 minutes to download, and about the same amount of time to install, the wireless carrier notes.

Sprint also notes that “A System update screen will prompt the user to 'Install now' or 'Install later'. If 'Install later' is selected, a reminder will be sent once or twice a day to install the update. If 'Install now' is selected, the phone will power down and then reboot.”

As stated above, the new software solution will be pushed to devices over the air. The process started on Thursday and should continue for the next few days.

Users who would like to download and install the new DI18 update would have to have the software version DI07 on their devices.

“If you are still on DG17 or DG27, a Sprint Service and Repair Center should be able to update your device to DI07. The update from DI07 to DI18 is not yet available to the Service and Repair Centers,” the wireless carrier also announced.

Since the roll-out already started, all that remains to be seen is how long it would take for Sprint to send it to all Epic 4G units on its airwaves, and whether any issues would appear with it, so stay close for more info on this.

Update: It appears that the software solution was delayed a little, due to some administrative issues. Here's what Sprint says on the matter:

We were planning to release an update for your Samsung Epic 4G on 9/30. The file was delivered and on track for distribution but late this afternoon, we learned that an administrative issue prevented Google from releasing the update as we had planned.

We are working to resolve the issue and will provide an update as soon as we understand the new delivery schedule.
