Soon after GlobalStar presented the GSP 1700 as being the newest, smallest, lightest satellite phone on the marked, it was Thuraya's turn to prove that they could in fact make an even smaller and lighter one.

While the GlobalStar GSP 1700 measures 135 x 55 x 37 mm and weighs 200 grams including battery, Thuraya's new release, the SO-2510, measures 118 mm (height) x 53mm (width) x 18.8 (thick) and weighs 130g, considerably less than its rival from GlobalStar. It comes as no surprise that 28,000 units have already been sold or that the SO-2510 has overthrown the GSP 1700 and gained the title of lightest, smallest satellite phone. It features a 1.5 inch LCD, USB connectivity, GPS, and a battery providing 40 + hours of standby time and 2.4 hours of talk time. Slightly larger than the SO-2510, the Thuraya SG-2520 Smartphone is said to be the only satellite tri-band phone on the market that allows the use 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM networks. It measures 138.8 mm x 52 mm x 18.8 mm, and weighs 170 g; therefore, it too is lighter and thinner than the GlobalStar GSP 1700. SG-2520 is equipped with a 1.9 inch 262k display, an integrated 1.3 Megapixel camera and GPS.

The SO-2510 will cost around $725, while the SG -2520 will be sold at about $925.
