NEC LCD Technologies announced that it has developed four new system-on-glass (SOG) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules, suitable for PDAs and portable GPS terminals. Successful mass production trials for low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) TFT LCD modules began at NEC Akita on October, 1st.

The new modules consist of a 3.5 inch transmissive type LCD, a 3.5 inch transflective type LCD, a 2.7 inch transmissive type LCD and a 2.7 inch transflective type LCD. All the products feature the same resolution as VGA TFT LCD modules.

The LCD modules have integrated peripheral circuitry on the glass substrate of the TFT LCD, this leading to a cost reduction, a faster time to market and the reduction of instrumentation parts built into the SOG LCD. In addition, they feature a function for displaying 16 million colors by a built-in step interpolation circuit, a switching VGA/QVGA display, and a touch panel.

Mass production of the 3.5-inch transflective LCDs and the 2.7-inch transmissive LCDs is planned for February, 2007.
