14 DAY TRIAL // The UK branch of Hong Kong-based optics manufacturer SLR Magic announced today the new Anamorphot 1.33x 50 anamorphic adapter for cinema lenses.
For those of you who are not acquainted with this type of accessories, you should know that using an 1.33x anamorphic adapter will allow filmmakers to achieve the much loved 2.35:1 scope aspect ratio by compressing the image horizontally and increasing resolution.
Usually, cinematographers had to use rare vintage spherical lenses to capture 16:9 footage and crop the top and the bottom in order to achieve the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This means that 25% of the entire footage captured by the sensor is lost in the process.
The new SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x adapter will allow filmmakers to get the best image quality possible by compressing a 33% wider field of view to use the entire 16:9 sensor / negative without losing vertical resolution.
“Modern professional cinema cameras have large sensors capable of capturing an image in the 2.35:1 format directly, using spherical lenses, but film makers still desire the anamorphic “look” which often limits them to using rare vintage lenses. These present a number of difficulties in practice such as size, weight, lack of close focus, availability, and high price. We sought to overcome such issues with the SLR Magic Anamorphot,” said the company in a statement.
The latest SLR Magic anamorphic adapter will also create the unique effects including horizontal flares and streaks from light sources as well as ellipsoidal bokeh if used along with achromatic diopters. Moreover, depth of field will become shallower than before when using the Anamorphot adapter in comparison with the same lens without the adapter attached.
At the same time, the SLR Magic 77mm Achromatic Diopter Set (+0.33, +1.3) that was designed to be used along with the new anamorphic adapter has also been announced.
Both products will be available late March at a price of £749 / €899 / $1,230 for the Anamorphot 1.33x 50 Anamorphic Adapter and £249 / €299 / $400 for the Achromatic Diopter Set.
