The SCO Group, provider of UNIX software technology and mobile services, announced that the company has made the Palm Treo 700w and Palm Treo 700p smartphones reference platforms for SCO's expanding number of mobile services. In addition, SCO has become a member of Palm's PluggedIn developer program to more easily develop and deploy SCO mobile services on the Treo 700 series.

"SCO has shown a high degree of innovation with the mobile services they have created for the Treo platform," said Mike Rank, director of Developer Relations at Palm, Inc. "We look forward to continuing our work with them on the Palm Treo 700 series as they continue to help Treo users gain even greater value from their devices."

SCO first delivered its current Me Inc. Shout and Vote mobile services on the Palm Treo platform in 2005 with the Treo 600 and Treo 650 smartphones. SCO announced plans last year to introduce other mobile services and will soon deliver the first of these with the release of HipCheck for remote control and monitoring of Windows and UNIX systems as well as clients including the upcoming release of Windows Vista.

"We chose the Palm Treo smartphone as our initial reference platform because of the large user base and the flexibility of the platform," said Sandy Gupta, chief technology officer and general manager of the SCO platforms division. "The smart handheld device market is growing rapidly and is expected to continue this growth during the next five years and beyond. We have an entry into this market through both the Palm OS and Windows Mobile operating systems. Our continued development work with Palm will help our customers become more productive and allow us to deliver more mobile services to customers throughout the world in the coming years."
