Not until the expansion

Blizzard has a history of unparalleled innovation when it comes to strategy gaming and especially to its Starcraft franchise. Warcraft was always more formulaic in its approach to strategy, but Starcraft incorporated some elements that were really revolutionary when the game shipped.

One of these elements was that the game managed to present the player with a choice of three fully fleshed and original factions that were pretty well balanced even at launch and that were different enough to produce very interesting gameplay variations. This happened at a time when most strategy titles only had two sides which usually had the same units and buildings except for a superweapon and maybe a superunit.

Now Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce says that his company might vary on this particular mantle of innovation by adding a fourth StarCraft II race to the game. He says that the addition is only possible "in the event" of an expansion being made for the game. I personally can bet that the expansion will happen, at one point, so let the speculation regarding the identity of the fourth race begin (I bet it’s the returning Xel Naga). I bet the fan forums are now ablaze with speculation.

Pearce commented that "We talked about the possibility of a fourth race early on, but we felt like we had a finite amount of great ideas and wanted to make sure we focused all the cool, best ideas on the existing three races rather than diluting those ideas across four races."

I understand the need to converse resources during development and focus on expanding an already sound game concept rather than doing new things, but please, Blizzard, make sure that at least you include a cameo of the fourth race, in unplayable form in the initial release of the game.
