Samsung has quietly launched the Galaxy R back in August, but the Android smartphone has yet to reach its full potential.

Although the handset is now overshadowed by the manufacturer's Galaxy S II Android flagship devices, it may become an excellent alternative to the expensive Galaxy S II, if priced accordingly.

For those out of the loop, Galaxy R is the “light” version of the Galaxy S II, and targets customers who cannot afford the latter.

However, when it comes to performance, the technological gap between the two models is not that large, which makes it difficult for Samsung to deliver the Galaxy R at a much lower price, in comparison with the Galaxy S II.

According to the guys over at AndroidOS (via tipster), Samsung India is expected to launch the Galaxy R sometime next month.

It appears that the phone will be initially priced at Rs. 23,000 (about $464 or 346 EUR), but the information has yet to be confirmed by the manufacturer.

Just like Samsung Galaxy S II, the Galaxy R is powered by Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, but embeds a slightly lower dual core Tegra 2 processor clocked at 1Ghz, while the former is equipped with a 1.2GHz dual core Exynos CPU.

Samsung Galaxy R features a 4.2-inch SC-LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors and 480 x 800 pixels resolution, which makes it just 0.1-inch smaller than Galaxy S II's display.

It is also worth mentioning that the Galaxy R comes with 8GB of internal memory, 1024 MB of RAM, 2048 MB of ROM, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

On related news, Samsung Wave 3 will be launched around the same timeline, but details about the phone's price and exact release date have yet to be announced.
