Canadian carrier Rogers has just announced that it will invest up to $80 million to expand its 4G HSPA+ network to cover the Maritimes provinces in Eastern Canada.

Following the network upgrade, customers in three provinces, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island will be provided with greater signal strength, faster downloads and increased device selection.

According to Rogers, more than 1 million people across these provinces will benefit from the enhanced wireless services, which is about 130% increase over current population coverage for the carrier.

Maritimers told us they wanted better coverage, faster speeds and a greater selection of mobile devices,” said Rogers President for Atlantic Canada, Ken Marshall.

With this investment, customers all across the Maritimes can fuel their passions by switching to Rogers and connecting - in high speed, on the device they want - to what matters to them most,” he added.

Rogers' two-year project is the latest in a series of major investments in the area and one of the largest to date by Rogers in this region.

The carrier plans to expand its 4G HSPA+ network to cover 94% of the Maritime population by the end of the multi-million dollar project.

In addition, Rogers stated that customers will also be able to take advantage of the latest devices including Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and tablets, as soon as the network upgrade is complete.

The freedom and choice enabled by the expanded Rogers network will change the way we live and work here,” said Marshall. “In more places than ever before, the Rogers enhanced 4G HSPA+ network will be readily available, making communications better and easier for new and existing Rogers' customers in the Maritimes.”

It appears that the carrier decided to begin working on its enhanced Maritime wireless network this month and will continue through 2012.
