The music game genre has really been on a high ascending trend these days, as games have become very popular, and major publishers want to get a part of the big profits they generate. A few titles dominate the market, like Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but some very interesting competitors are already appearing. Wii Music or Lips might be able to take on these games, but only time will tell if people leave the two popular releases for other titles.

Another game which will surely attract a lot of customers has just been announced by Acclaim, which says that its new browser based project, RockFree, will give players the complete rock experience, with no charge whatsoever. The game, which will be completely online and browser based, will allow players to connect through music and will become, slowly but surely, a full social network.

RockFree will give players the chance to create their own custom avatar and open a rock club in which they will engage in battles against other players around the world. A closed beta stage has already started, with three songs already in the portfolio of the game, and another 40 songs already in production, exclusively for RockFree. The title is set to be released in early 2009 and Acclaim says that it has partnered with major record labels like WaveGroup, Warner Music, Sony and EMI in order to release songs for this game.

“Acclaim Games is excited about offering an online rock game that connects people through music and a multiplayer experience. People don’t have to pay hundreds of dollars to play ROCKFREE, and because it’s free-to-play the entire world can now enjoy a music based game,” revealed Howard Marks, CEO of Acclaim Games.

All in all, these are really big pieces of news for all of the PC owners who couldn't afford to pay hundreds of dollars for music games and their custom peripherals. Acclaim might get a lot of people interested in this title, but let's hope that they will deliver a quality experience for all of the virtual rockers out there.
