What started the dispute is still not certain

On Sunday, 19-year-old singer Chris Brown turned himself in to the police following a battery complaint coming from a yet unknown woman who had identified the singer as her assailant. While the police would not reveal the name of the victim, the LA Times and TMZ can confirm that she was Rihanna, as previously speculated.

Before the violent altercation, which escalated to such a point that concerned passers-by were compelled to call the police, Brown and Rihanna were seen in his rented Lamborghini pumping gas. It was from there on that things became a bit hazy but, hopefully, the ongoing police investigation will clear them soon enough.

What is known so far is that, on Sunday morning, Chris Brown got into a bitter exchange of words with a woman in his car. He got out of the vehicle and, eyewitnesses say, it is from there that the situation got so awry that people called 911. When the officers got to the scene, Brown was no longer present, but the woman was, and she identified Brown as the assailant. An arrest warrant was consequently issued on his name.

Hours later, Chris Brown came to the police headquarters and surrendered himself. He was booked and charged with making criminal threats and battery, had the bail set at $50,000 and was sprung free once he paid it. Attorney Mark Geragos, known for his work with clients such as Michael Jackson and Wynona Ryder, accompanied Brown at the police station, but would not comment on his client’s situation in any way.

Following the incident, both Chris Brown and Rihanna canceled their appearance and performance at this year’s Grammy Awards. While a spokesperson for the gala told the media (off the record) that the victim was Rihanna herself, her publicist stated that she was “well,” thanking fans for their concern and support. Now, TMZ and the LA Times are saying that Rihanna was, beyond a doubt, the victim in the Brown battery case.
