It’s been nine months since news broke that Rihanna was assaulted by then-boyfriend Chris Brown after a fight that reportedly broke over some text message he had received from an unknown woman. Brown, on his part, talked to the media about the incident, but Rihanna didn't say a thing until just recently, when she opened up about it to Diane Sawyer, as People magazine confirms.

The singer agreed to sit down with Sawyer and discuss the domestic abuse case, in what was a first interview of this type. Rihanna said that being a victim of such abuse could happen to anyone, which was precisely why she was finally agreeing to discuss her own case and, this way, use her celebrity status to draw attention to such an important issue. In the same interview, the “Umbrella” hitmaker also said the incident was all the more grave as Brown was her first true love.

“Nine months after her fight with Chris Brown, Rihanna finally opens up about the night that left her bruised and bloody. ‘This happened to me… It can happen to anyone,’ the singer, 21, tells Diane Sawyer in an interview airing Thursday on Good Morning America and on 20/20 on Friday. Rihanna says it was particularly difficult because of the special place Brown held in her heart: ‘He was definitely my first big love.’” People writes of the interview.

Since the altercation, which took place in February and ended in court with a guilty sentence on domestic violence charges for Brown, both singers have moved on. Chris Brown has repeatedly apologized for his actions on several television shows, while also using his official webpage and YouTube channel to send messages to Rihanna, whom he’s not to approach in person for another five years, as a restraining order says, to tell her that he misses her and wants her back.

Not that Rihanna has responded in any way to Brown’s pleas, for that matter. Judging from her latest two tracks released, “Russian Roulette” and “Wait Your Turn (The Wait Is Ova),” she used the experience to grow as an artist, but she’s not willing to revisit the past by getting back together with Brown.
