Rep confirms the news

More than a year ago, shortly after Chris Brown lashed out at her, beaten her to a pulp and then fled the scene, Rihanna was believed to be considering starring in a remake of “Bodyguard,” in which she’d step in Whitney Houston’s shoes. Going into acting had long been a dream of the singer, it was said at the time – but the “Bodyguard” film never happened. Not all is lost, though, E! Online says.

It seems that one thing that was accurate about the report was Rihanna’s intention of going outside her comfort zone and trying to make a name for herself as an actress as well. Her spokesperson has just confirmed for E! that she’d been cast for a role in “Battleship,” an upcoming Sci-Fi film that will mark Rihanna’s first time in front of the camera as anyone but herself. Hopefully, she will be spared of having to be blamed for the movie’s failure, something that many singers are familiar with, E! says.

“Here’s hoping Rihanna doesn’t sink Battleship. The 22-year-old pop-R&B star has signed on to make her feature-film debut in the action flick, which, as it sounds, is inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, her rep confirms to E! News. While the songstress’ soundtrack credits on IMDb are many, she’s yet to appear as anyone but herself on TV, let alone the big screen,” E! writes after confirming the news with the singer’s rep.

Apparently, the film will be an A-list affair in its entirety. “But at least Rihanna’s got a seaworthy cast and crew behind her, including Friday Night Lights hunk Taylor Kitsch and True Blood hottie Alexander Skarsgård as brothers who end up leading the fight for their planet’s survival against an otherworldly force. Hancock helmer Peter Berg is attached to direct with an eye on a May 25, 2012, release date,” the aforementioned media outlet says.

Back in March when the “Bodyguard” rumor first transpired to the press, it was said Rihanna had been thinking about going into acting for quite some time. She was looking for the perfect film to help her start building a career. Clearly, “Bodyguard” was not the one – but “Battleship” is. Keep an eye on this space for more on this.
