Over the weekend, Katy Perry made her first public appearance since Russell Brand filed for divorce, ending their 14-month marriage. However short-lived their romance might have been, Katy is still heartbroken over it – so it's a good thing she has plenty of friends to offer her proper support.

Hollywood Life reports that Katy has been getting very close to her already good friend Rihanna, who is constantly checking up on her to make sure she's ok.

The e-zine notes that it's a good thing she has people to rely on given reports that she's having such a hard time dealing with the reality of the demise of her marriage.

It's believed that she's been avoiding coming out on the red carpet shortly after the divorce precisely for this reason.

Admittedly, she went away for a while, to “get away from the drama,” which, of course, includes having to answer questions about Russell and what went wrong in their relationship.

“Katy’s friends are doing everything they can to help keep her happy and just be there to listen to her,” one insider is quoted as saying.

Rihanna is one of them, adds the spy.

“Rihanna has been unbelievable and checks up on her every day and even invited her on a trip. Katy even asked Rihanna to meet her in Vegas and be there with her,” the source explains.

For what it's worth, Katy's parents have already spoken out about the divorce, saying that, while they don't believe in it, they have no plans of judging their daughter for wanting one if things were really that bad.

Moreover, they affirmed their belief that the divorce, just like everything in life, is a gift from God, albeit a disguised one, as we also reported at the time.

“I'm sure Katy is trending on the internet just to get you to church tonight,” Mary Hudson, Katy's mother, said in church, trying to joke about the divorce.

“I mean all over the world, who knows how God is bringing them in? The most important thing is you are here and God wants to put the fire in you in 2012,” she added.

On the same occasion, Keith Hudson, the singer's dad, refused to make light of the situation, saying parents should always support and unconditionally love their children.

“I love my daughter and I will always love her. Stop being judgmental and critical. Do not close the doors to your loved ones, especially your children,” he said.
