The 14-month marriage to Russell Brand may cost Katy Perry more dearly than she believed: because they did not sign a prenup before getting married, he could be entitled to half her money, various reports in the media suggest.

As we also informed you earlier today, Russell filed for divorce from Katy last Friday but, because they had spent Christmas apart, the news didn't really shock fans.

In a statement issued after the papers were filed, the British comedian said that he knew for a fact he and Katy would remain good friends – but not if he actually goes through and asks for half her money.

According to the Daily Mail, this could be one option for him. He and Katy do not have a prenup, which means that he could, if he wanted, take half her earnings.

“The comedian is in line for the huge lump sum in a 50/50 split of the couple's earnings even after just 14 months of marriage,” the British publication writes.

“Brand, 36, and Perry, 27, didn't sign a pre-nuptial agreement when they married in October 2010 so under Californian law, he could be entitled to half of her fortune,” adds the Mail.

Katy is worth twice as much money than Russell and that's without including the amounts she raked in just recently from her latest tour.

“According to Forbes Magazine, Perry is worth £28 million [$43.6 million / €33.5 million], a fortune that industry insiders said has rocked recently to at least £45 million [$70 million / €53.8 million] due to her non-stop touring and commercial ventures,” the British publication says.

Brand is “only” worth an estimated £11 million ($17 million / €13 million), the same report notes, half of which, of course, Katy would be entitled to.

Also according to ongoing reports, the marriage between the two ended because they were no longer on the same page and whatever chemistry they still had, was no longer making it work.

Before Christmas, word has it, they sat down and talked about divorce: and then decided they both wanted to be out of town when news broke, so she went to Hawaii and he went to the UK.
