Rihanna is considered by most fashion insiders a genuine trendsetter. She was the one who made the mohawk ok again, who brought hoopla oversized earrings back and who, in short, reinvented her look time and time again to incorporate all the latest trends. Still, the outfit she chose over the holidays for a night of clubbing is nothing short of the most daring yet, as the British publication the Daily Mail also points out.

Decked in slick black pants and a men’s black blazer, Rihanna stunned the fashion world once more with her choice of a top to go under the jacket, in that she opted for none. The gaping black jacket with rolled-up sleeves, much in the manner men wore theirs in early ‘90s, was matched with a pair of sequined pasties (silver stars / petals) that covered the singer’s shame while also giving the public a clear view of what they were missing out on, as the tab puts it.

“In Hollywood, one person’s wardrobe malfunction is another’s fashion statement – just ask Rihanna.” the Mail writes, hinting at Janet Jackson’s much mediated Super Bowl malfunction. “The 21-year-old arrived for Independence Day celebrations over the weekend flashing daring silver sequined petals from beneath her gaping tuxedo jacket. Far from being an embarrassing moment of overexposure, it was a very deliberate move by the bold ‘Umbrella’ singer who seemed completely at ease in her most provocative outfit yet.” it is further being said.

For all it’s worth, Rihanna seemed extremely comfortable in her revealing outfit, despite the fact that the jacket opened wide every time she sat down or made a move. It is precisely this careless attitude that has prompted several fashion publications in the US to brand her a trendsetter once more, in that she manages to do the unthinkable (wear pasties underneath what can be a formal jacket) while also looking cool and even indifferent to some extent.

On the same note, it is also this attitude that has gotten other stars who have tried on this look (Lady Gaga and Dita Von Teese being just two of the lot) the same trendsetter label. In the end, it is being said, it’s not so much what one wears that makes an impact, as it’s how one wears that particular item. As far as Rihanna and the sequined pasties go, she can certainly rock them.
