Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is one of the most widely awaited games for the Nintendo 3DS handheld, but initially it was not supposed to be the first game in the Capcom-made universe to arrive on the new handheld, with Revelations planned to launch as soon as possible for the new device.

But after Resident Evil: Revelations was announced in the summer of 2010, the team working on the game, which is set to be as close as possible to the traditions of the series, realized that the development would take a long time and chose to start another project, which became Mercenaries.

Masachika Kawata, who is a producer working on the Resident Evil series, has told 1UP that, “Creating a single Mercenaries game was something that we wanted to do for a long time.”

He added, “We didn't necessarily say that it would be on this hardware or this platform, but we saw a really good opportunity to make the game, blow out the experience, and make it worthy of its own cartridge - and at the same time, learn a whole lot about what challenges we were going to face developing for the future of the Resident Evil series on the 3DS. It was really the perfect answer to some of those questions.”

The new Resident Evil game will expand on the Mercenaries mode which was seen in both the fourth and the fifth game in the series, with both the characters that the gamers will control and the maps on which they will fight familiar to long-term fans.

The game is described as being more action oriented that standard Resident Evil experiences and the developers at Capcom probably hope that they can establish a whole new series, with mechanics that appeal to those who see the basic Resident Evil too slow and cumbersome.
