Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to receive its first “content drop” today, on the Xbox 360 platform, as premium subscribers to the Call of Duty Elite online service will be able to enjoy two fresh multiplayer maps.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 broke sales records all around the world and it is the first game in which Activision departs from its regular DLC strategy. Instead of the normal map packs, like with previous games, the company will deliver new content in the form of monthly “drops” which are a timed exclusive for its Call of Duty Elite subscribers on the Xbox 360.

The first two drops happen today, January 24, as two new multiplayer maps, Liberation and Piazza, will be available as a free download for Call of Duty Elite premium subscribers on the Xbox 360. Non-premium Elite members, as well as those who play Modern Warfare 3 on platforms like the PC or PS3 will have to wait until the content is made available to them.

“The first two Content Drops will be multiplayer maps—also playable in Modern Warfare 3 Survival Mode—that throw combatants into a war-torn Central Park and an Italian seaside village,” Activision said about the DLC. “Liberation is a vast, militarized landscape, ripe for long-range sniper and LMG fire, with mounted turrets on either end that lend power to anyone brave enough to expose themselves in exchange for deadly firepower.”

“Piazza is the idyllic Italian getaway that is anything but, where tight corners and branching pathways pose great risk at every turn. Close-range combat dominates in Piazza, where attacks from behind, above and below are an ever-constant threat.”

New content drops will arrive each month until September, according to Activision. Regular DLC map packs are also going to be made available every few months and they will deliver the new levels in the form of $15/€15 add-ons.

Considering the amount of free things and the timed exclusivity, however, Call of Duty fans should certainly consider getting a premium subscription to Elite, in exchange for $50/€50 a year.
