Sony claims that shipments of its PlayStation 2 gaming console reached the 100 million units number. PS2 (PlayStation 2) was launched for the first time in Japan in March 2000, as the successor of the PlayStation console. After five years and nine months, 100 million units were sold worldwide. In order, PlayStation 2 outsell its predecessor.

The company says that North America turned out to be the best market for gaming consoles, with shipments of over 40,6 million units while Europe recorded sales of 37,1 million units. In Asia, only 22,2 million units were shipped.

Now, the gaming consoles market is expanding, third generation consoles being launched. Microsoft's Xbox 360 was launched on November 22, and its Sony's PS3 (PlayStation3) biggest rival. Right now, Sony is developing PlayStation 3, which will be available in the first half of 2006.

The company expects to have also remarkable sales figures for its future PS3 console, especially when PS2 sales began to drop. This is happening because Microsoft already launched its 3rd generation gaming console, Xbox 360, and people are rushing to buy the most recent technology.
