Francis Crick's letter announcing the discovery of DNA to his 12-year-old son has just become the most expensive letter ever written and posted.

“We have built a model for the structure of des-oxy-ribose-nucleic-acid, called DNA for short. In other words we think we have found the basic copying mechanism by which life comes from life,” reads one small fragment of it.

Long story short, the letter, which dates back to 1953, was sold for a whopping $5.3 million (€4.04 million) at an auction held in New York.

The name of the letter's buyer is yet to be shared with the public, Mirror reports.

As was the case with Napoleon's engagement ring to Josephine, the letter ended up selling for surprisingly more money than initially expected.

Thus, estimates made prior to the auction suggested that its buying price would revolve around $1 – 2 million (€0.76 – 1.52 million).
