This past March 24, Napoleon's engagement to Josephine sold for a whopping $949,000 (€730,556) at an auction organized in France.

As previously reported, the ring was expected to sell for about $19,500 / €15,000, so saying that the piece of jewelry proved to be worth more than expected is pretty much an understatement.

The ring consists of a gold band and two tear-shaped gems, one of which is a sapphire and the other a diamond.

Given the fact that Napoleon did not pay all that much for the ring when he purchased it, it is safe to assume that its being auctioned off for said sum can only come as a result of its historical significance.

Sources report that, for the time being, the person who purchased the ring wishes to remain anonymous.
