More details about the rebooted Thief suggest that the video game will have an entirely new stealth and takedown engine and will take place in a city that’s changed but retains some of the familiar elements of the series.

Leaked information coming from a Russian website reveal that the story will see main character Garrett return to a version of the city that’s dominated by a Baron who rules with an iron fist, guarded by an army, while the rest of the city suffers.

Apparently, the clock tower, which was destroyed in previous titles in the Thief series, is Garret’s new base of operations, and the characters’ shadowy movement makes the population believe that it’s haunted.

Reportedly, the script for Thief is being created by one of the creators of Oscar winner Gladiator.

Players will be directly affected by rumors because they make in-game crowds suspicious, ready to react violently to any detection.

The leaked information also mentions a brothel called the House of Blossoms, where a Chinese transvestite named Qiao Qiao worked, suggesting an entirely new population distribution for the world of Thief.

The new sneak mechanics that Ubisoft is working on will feature darkened edges for the player’s screen to indicate if he is visible or not, and Garret will have more ways of distracting enemies who are searching for him.

The team also drew inspiration from the new Sherlock Holmes movies for the combat system, which will include points that players can use in order to quickly react to threats and take them down before they can raise an alarm.

More exotic tools, like opium, that can be spread through the air vents to calm an entire area, are also mentioned.

The Thief reboot is developed by Eidos Montreal and will be published by Square Enix on the PC, the PlayStation 4, and other next-gen devices at some point in 2014.
