After confirming yesterday that they're working on a reboot for the Thief series, developer Eidos Montreal and publisher Square Enix have now released an official description for the game and emphasized how it wants to reinvent it with the upcoming Thief title.

Thief games have delivered some extremely impressive experiences over the years, managing to combine stealth gameplay with smart enemies, complex environments, and a great anti-hero, in the form of protagonist Garrett.

Now, developer Eidos Montreal wants to reboot the whole series with the simply-titled Thief.

After hearing its confirmation yesterday, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix have officially revealed a description for the upcoming game, detailing the premise of the story and some of the core mechanics.

"There is a rising tide of fear in The City. Hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with sickness and famine, they wait for something to change," the companies said in a statement.

"Into this shadowy world steps Garrett, the master thief in a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose their path through the game’s levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge."

Eidos Montreal's General Manager, Stephane D'Astous, also chimed in to say just how proud the studio is of its upcoming project and assures fans of the series that the new Thief will be worthy of the famous name.

"We’re handling a precious gemstone with Thief. Fans remember the original games very fondly and we want to preserve that essence - which we have excellent experience of doing at Eidos Montréal - whilst also introducing Thief to a brand new, next-generation, audience. Our goal is to deliver the fantasy of being Garrett, the master thief, and we’re building this game around that core experience."

The new Thief will be released for the PC, PlayStation 4 and other next-generation platforms (including the oft-rumored Xbox 720) in 2014.
