iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners around the world might want to stay close to their computers with iTunes launched, even if they don’t need to transfer any new songs, videos, or apps, because Apple has started notifying enrolled iOS developers that “iOS 4.2 will soon be in the hands of millions of customers around the world.”

An email sent to Apple developers today confirms the company’s plans to roll out iOS 4.2 soon.

iOS programmers are given the heads up with the sole purpose of having their applications ready for App Store approval.

The company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California is encouraging coders to make sure their apps support all the new features iOS 4.2 brings, including Multitasking, Game Center, and AirPrint, all of which specifically target iPad owners.

However, there are goodies in store for iPhone and iPod touch owners as well, albeit mostly tweaks and improvements.

To update to the new version of the software, iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners must tether their devices to a computer running iTunes, select their device in the left pane of the iTunes window, and click "check for update" in the "summary" tab.

A transcript of Apple's official message sent out to developers today is available below.
