Ian Somerhalder beats Robert Pattinson in fans’ poll for title of hottest beast ever

Since vampires and other nightly and / or undead creatures have brought Hollywood profits of no less than $7 billion over just 2 years, Entertainment Weekly

has run a poll to determine which was the hottest beast ever to grace a screen.

The idea for the poll is as original as it proved to be controversial, for the final round saw two of the hottest vampires of the day go neck and neck – or fang and fang, more likely.

In the end, the unthinkable happened when Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) of “Twilight” was sent home crying (only figuratively, of course) by Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) of CW’s “Vampire Diaries.”

Somerhalder was named the ultimate beast ever to grace the screen, be it big or small. Moreover, this was no small survey, as it was done over both Twitter and Facebook, aside from EW’s webpage, and counted over 1.5 million votes at the end of 30 days.

The ayes have spoken, as the saying goes – and Cullen is definitely out of the picture as the most gorgeous and deadly beast.

“Take 64 of the hottest vampires, werewolves, aliens, mutants, monsters, and machines ever to grace the pop-culture landscape; pit them against one another in a good old-fashioned, single-elimination bracket tourney; see who prevailed (while indulging in a little eye-candy perusal in the process),” EW says of its poll.

“Along the way there were upsets (Battlestar Galactica’s slinky Number Six ousted in the second round), surprises (Charmed’s Cole Turner / Belthazor going all the way to the round of 16), and heartbreaks (Ms. Pac-man making a humiliatingly early exit),” the media outlet further says.

Though Somerhalder won, it was a very close call for the last round, the publication informs. Midway through the final day of voting, only 200 votes separated him from Pattinson.

In the end, he scored 138,630 votes, only 3,902 more than his equally brooding but kinder nemesis, played by Pattinson. Asked about how he felt about the win, Ian attributed it to Justin Bieber.

“I think [co-star Matt Davis] text-messaged Justin Bieber and said ‘Hey, would you please vote for my friend?’ I’m not even kidding,” he says for the same publication that ran the poll.
