Not long ago, we were telling you about a new vampire story getting ready to come out into the light – pun intended – on the small screen. Starring Ian Somerhalder of the “Lost” fame, the “Vampire Diaries” would be just like “Twilight” and the “New Blood” series, only much better. To prove that these vampires are special, standing apart from the other ones, CW has just launched the Love Sucks campaign for the upcoming series.

Nina Dobrev is Elena, the human girl with whom a vampire will inevitably fall in love, just like in the long feature film “Twilight,” which will make for the force that will get the ball rolling, as they say. Ian Somerhalder is Damon, an almost angelic looking young man who also happens to be a vampire. The same goes for Paul Wesley, who will appear in the series as Stefan, the good vampire with whom Elena falls in love.

Those who have seen the pilot say that “Vampire Diaries” is like “Twilight” with a more mature target audience and, therefore, rating, which can also be inferred from the shots included in the Love Sucks campaign. As much as fans try to avoid comparisons with “Twilight,” some can’t help but notice that “Diaries” promises a bit more heat and passion than the aforementioned flick, perhaps in its honest attempt to set itself apart from it. One thing it does just like “Twilight” is that it includes an extremely beautiful cast, several movie-oriented publications point out.

“It’s not ‘Twilight,’ it’s not ‘True Blood’.” writer and executive producer Kevin Williamson was saying a while back when presenting the show. “Well, yes, the basic premise is the same, but the show very quickly comes to a fork in the road and goes in a completely different direction.” Williamson added. Even with the similarities – be they acknowledged or not – “Vampire Diaries” promises to be a hit, if only judging by the recently released photos.

There’s no longer any doubt that the public’s fascination with the deadly undead creatures who can, occasionally, have a soul and be able to love, has come to life again. Julie Plec, another executive producer on the show, seems to have an explanation for that. “You meet some dark, mysterious, gorgeous guy, and you want to believe that there’s so much going on behind those eyes – so much wisdom, so much soul and experience. In real life, that hardly ever happens. You just don’t get that. But with vampires, you do. Vampires are like bad boys with brains.” Plec said during the same interview.
