The foal is the offspring of mom Djara and dad Gigolo, keepers say

Djara and Gigolo, two wild asses living in captivity at Zoo Basel in Switzerland, are now the proud parents of an adorable foal that was born at this facility about two and a half weeks ago.

The baby wild ass, pictured above, arrived into this world on March 27. It is a girl, and keepers have decided to name it Lakisha, Zoo Borns informs.

According to staff at Zoo Basel, Djara had a fairly easy labor. Lakisha stood up about half an hour after it had been born, and, 30 minutes later, it was already busy nursing for the first time.

Judging from the picture above, it is safe to assume that Lakisha is quite energetic, and very much likes to run around the enclosure it shares with its mom and the other wild asses that now live as this wildlife park in Switzerland.

Wildlife researchers tell us that, presently, the Somali wild ass is listed as a critically endangered species. These herbivores can be found in Somalia, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, and risk going extinct as a result of overhunting.

The fact that they must compete with livestock for food and water and quite often end up losing also threatens their long-term survival, specialists detail.
