The upcoming Rage title has just received a batch of fresh details from its developer, id Software, and publisher, Bethesda, with information being spilled on its two distinct multiplayer modes, while the single-player portion received new screenshots and a gameplay video.

Rage is shaping up to be a surprise hit, with id Software and Bethesda making sure that this combination between combat racing and role-playing first-person shooter will get noticed amongst the big sequels that will be out this year.

Now, the first actual details on Rage's multiplayer modes have been revealed, and they're quite interesting, to say the least.

"What we didn't want to do is just throw a couple of guys on foot and they're fighting and call it our online offering," said Rage Design Director Matt Hooper to Destructoid. "That's not what we wanted to do. We wanted to make it uniquely Rage."

First up, Rage will have a special Combat Rally competitive mode, which is basically a spin on other combat racing games like Twisted Metal, with players racing through large areas and using the weapons mounted on their buggies to take down opponents.

When players won't be destroying one another, this special mode will prompt them to complete checkpoint-based races, so it's going to be an extremely interesting experience.

If shooting is more your style, then you'll be happy to hear that Rage will have a cooperative Legends of the Wasteland mode, which will be playable both in split-screen and online.

The mode is filled with various missions that take place in areas from the single-player narrative, with weapons and gadgets also making the transition from the story campaign.

The Combat Rally mode is set to have "at least five" circuits, while the Legends of the Wasteland is going to get "at least eight" different maps.

Rage is set to appear on September 13, in North America, and September 16, in Europe, for the PC, Mac, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Until then, check out the new screenshots and gameplay video of Rage below.
