Show an 11 percent increase in revenue

Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion announced on Thursday its financial results for the third quarter of its fiscal year 2010, a three months period ended November 28, 2009. According to the company, it managed to register $3.92 billion in revenues for the time frame, marking an 11 percent increase from $3.53 billion posted in the previous quarter, and a 41 percent growth when compared to the $2.78 billion registered in the same quarter a year ago.

[ADMARk=1]At the same time, the company further revealed that 82 percent of the revenue came from devices, 14 percent came from services, while 2 percent from software and other 2 percent went for other revenue. 10.1 million smartphones were shipped in the time frame, notes RIM, adding that the quarter also saw the 75 millionth BlackBerry smartphone being delivered to the market. During Q3 FY10 RIM registered a number of 4.4 million net new BlackBerry subscriber accounts added, ending the period with a subscriber base totaling 36 million.

“We are pleased to report record shipments of more than 10 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter with higher than expected revenue, earnings and subscriber growth,” said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “RIM is experiencing a great start to the holiday buying season and the strong Q3 results and Q4 outlook clearly reflect the strength of our diversified product portfolio as well as the success of our efforts to expand into broader customer segments and new geographies while maintaining our strong position in North America.”

When it comes to the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2010, ending February 27, 2010, RIM expects the revenues to be in the $4.2-$4.4 billion range. At the same time, it also says that it should register a gross margin of around 43.5 percent, and that the net subscriber account additions should range from 4.4 to 4.7 million. The Canadian phone maker further estimates for the earnings per share to be of around $1.23-$1.31 per share diluted.
