A leading developer at id Software has said that the company's upcoming shooter RAGE will get downloadable content soon after release as part of a strategy which focuses on creating a sustainable franchise for the company.

When asked about Eurogamer whether the game would get DLC Tim Willits, who is the creative director at id Software, simply answered “Yes”.

He then added, “The framework is there, and we plan on supporting the game soon after launch. We do think this is an important brand for us and we want to maximise the brand and also let people see that we are committed to this product.”

It seems that the entire RAGE in game universe is created to support more games and to allow the player to fantasize about what happened to make the world the way he explores it.

Willits says, “You can imagine that stuff happened before you got there, and stuff will happen after you leave. We wanted to make a rich world that we can expand on through iPhone games, other platform games, sequels and prequels.”

id has been working on RAGE and on the new id Tech 5 that will power it since 2007 and it's the first project in quite a long time that is completely done in house at the company.

The game will take place on an Earth which has witnessed an impact with an asteroid and will combine first person shooting with some racing action, with enemies that can use terrain to assault the player enemy and social interactions that are used to further the story.

The new engine looks really impressive and id is probably hoping to recapture the first person crown from Epic and their Gears of War with RAGE.

RAGE is set to be launched for the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PC at some point during 2011, probably during the fall season.
