Speaking of iPhones with white coatings, 4 bids into the posting of a prototype White iPhone 4 offer, eBay seller ticiamattia23 may be US $2,838 richer by the end of the day as he claims to have a real Apple collectible in his possession.

The device is an alleged White iPhone 4 which, needless to point out, is one rare item.

Apple is yet to ship these babies, and hasn’t yet issued an official statement as to when this will happen. Sources say the launch will occur this month. If the company plans not to break its third self-imposed deadline, it should launch this week.

But the prototype iPhone 4 selling on eBay is different. First of all, it’s a prototype, which makes it a collectible, as the seller himself outlines.

It’s marked with a prototype model number of 995-6364LL. The numbers DF3039 are engraved on the front. It certainly appears legit.

As with other leaked prototype units, the back features XX markings - placeholders for the storage capacity.

The seller shows a picture of the phone switched on with the Settings menu showing information pertaining to the handset.

According to the image, it’s a 16GB model running iOS 4.3.1 and bearing the serial number 8801401JFRY.

Based on this designation, the seller asserts this handset once belonged to a developer called Jeffrey. If Apple were to go after the guy who lost the device, they pretty much have every bit of information they need right now.

The seller’s original description can be found below.

Hello! I Have a mint condition Executive iPhone 4 that has not been introduced to the public.  The phone has no Serial number written on the back.  It shows XXGB and Serial Number shows XXXXXXXXXXXX.  You have to go through the settings in order to view the SN.  The number shown in the display says 8801401JFRY (I believe that the phone belongs to an Apple Developer by the name of Jeffrey).

Here’s where you can bid on this collectible, if you have three grand burning a hole in your pocket.
