Karl Urban didn’t reveal his identity and no one will for many months more

A few days ago, Karl Urban seemed to have done the unthinkable by apparently telling the press the name of the villain Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing in “Star Trek 2,” arguably one of the fiercest guarded secrets about the production.

As it turns out, he didn't – and no one will for many months more if all goes well, producer Roberto Orci tells Trek Movie.

No one is supposed to know who the villain in the sequel is because that's part of the appeal of “Star Trek,” Orci explains.

“[We'll keep Cumberbatch's identity a secret] for as long as we can because of our belief that one of the fun things about Star Trek that distinguishes it from other franchises is that the story turns,” he says.

“It isn’t just the spectacle of Star Trek, not just the explosions and the battles, it is the plot. That is why we are so protective of plot and character with this particular franchise. In others that isn’t the case but in this one we can preserve the experience for some people of not knowing exactly until we get there,” he adds.

At the same time, Orci is aware that their plan is likely to fail because fans are too eager to find out the identity of the villain – but, as the saying goes, at least they will go down knowing they tried.

“Star Trek” will be out in March 2013. Orci says a first trailer will most likely premiere this fall, but not sooner.
