PopCap Games, the creator of Peggle, announces that it has launched the first edition of the Peggle Art Contest, which aims to use the power of the crowds and players in order to get the very best art for the next game in the series.

The contest is set to begin today and will run until June 3, as part of the Peggle Fever promotion that PopCap has unveiled. During the three-month period, Peggle is set to be launched on a variety of new platforms, like the Nintendo DS (today), the iPhone from Apple, and the Xbox Live Arcade Service from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, the Peggle Art Contest is only available in the United States and in the United Kingdom, which severely limits the talent pool from which PopCap can draw. The company says that the contest will have prizes of 10,000 dollars. Some of the winners will be taken on a trip to the headquarters of PopCap in Seattle, some of them will get shopping sprees at Best Buy, some will receive limited editions of Peggle merchandise, while others can get their hands on iPhones and on Xbox 360 gaming consoles with Peggle pre-installed.

There's no limit to what those interested in the contest can create. They can draw a background for a game stage, describe a new Peggle Master and his/her superpowers and they can even create new and exciting level designs. All those interested can check out the official site to see the rule set and the entry forms.

Sukhbir Sidhu, one of the creators of Peggle and the studio director at PopCap, said that “We get a lot of fan mail from Peggle devotees, including lots of suggestions for background art, new Peggle characters and power-ups, and level designs, and thought an art contest would be a fun way to foster and tap into that creativity and enthusiasm for the game. We’re excited to see what the rabid Peggle community comes up with in the way of ideas!”
