Burlesque dancer says she never felt mainstream attractive

Burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese is not known only for being the former wife of shock rocker Marilyn Manson, although many are quick to say that this is her main claim to fame. In the fashion world, Dita is hailed as one of the most innovative and stylish presences of the moment, always creating her own fantasy world from which she steps out to walk among regular people.

It’s precisely this fantasy world that’s helping Dita cope with what some may interpret as insecurities, as the star admits to have adopted the ’40s pin-up look and style because she simply felt she did not fit anywhere in particular. In order to stand out from the crowd, the dancer realized she needed to do something different, project her own make-believe “reality” onto others, and she could only do this by turning back in time and drawing inspiration for her style straight from there.

“Part of the reason I style myself this way is because I never felt I could live up to what is typically shown to us as being [beautiful] in mainstream culture. I never felt like a natural beauty or that I could be pretty without make-up. No matter what I do, I’m never going to look like someone like Gisele Bundchen. No matter what! So I like creating a fantasy and using glamour.” Dita reveals in a recent interview.

In all fairness, it has been often said that Dita does not have the bone structure – or the body – to be considered beautiful by today’s industry standards. However, whenever she puts in an appearance, she manages not only to make herself noticed, but actually to steal the thunder from almost everybody else. This, according to Dita herself, happens precisely because of this fantasy persona that she projects, accessible yet unattainable at the same time, sophisticated, elegant and, therefore, gorgeous.

In the same interview, the dancer also addresses the topic of her love life and whether she’s as much of a “predator” as she comes across. Quite on the contrary, Dita reveals, she’s actually a rather shy girl who chooses to stand on the sideline and watch her “victim,” allowing him to make the first move.
