Danish high-end photographic equipment and software maker Phase One has just announced the world's first medium format digital camera back (IQ250) that uses a 50MP CMOS sensor capable of offering unprecedented image quality when compared with traditional CCD sensor medium format models.

Phase One IQ250 packs a 44x33mm sensor that covers 68 percent more image-capture than any conventional 35mm full-frame sensor. In addition to that, the digital back also offers the highest ISO sensitivity currently available on any medium format camera system, up to ISO6,400.

Besides these great features, Phase One IQ250 also comes with an extreme exposure time range from 1/10,000 of a second to one hour, responsive Live View, Wi-Fi support, and USB3 connection.

“We are very proud to introduce the Phase One IQ250 which carries on the tradition of Phase One high-quality medium format gear,” stated Henrik O. Håkonsson, CEO & president, Phase One.

“The wider ISO range in this new CMOS-based system, for example, illustrates our desire to continue pushing the envelope for our customers, to help them succeed in all of their unique imaging challenges.”

Phase One IQ250 is available for purchase right away from any of the firm's worldwide partners at a price of $34,990 / €24,990. Moreover, the company also provides an attractive upgrade offer for all current Phase One photographers. Upon purchasing the camera, you will also receive a copy of Capture One software to be capable of editing raw images with optimum performance.

A few days ago, renowned Swedish camera and photographic equipment manufacturer Hasselblad also announced the “world's first” 50MP medium format camera that uses a CMOS image sensor instead of the traditional CCD sensor.

Unlike Phase One, Hasselblad didn't give too much information about the upcoming camera and promised to reveal more in March. In our opinion, Phase One wins the duel, since the Danish manufacturer has presented an actual camera along with its full specifications, price, and availability.
