Patriot Memory has just announced that the company is planning to release a new series of solid state disks, known as Wildfire, which are based on the SandForce SF-2200 SSD controller and can reach read and write speeds in excess of 500MB/s.

This makes them one of the fastest SSDs announced until now, in line with all the other SandForce SF-2000 based drives previously detailed.

As it's usually the case with such high-performance storage solutions, the SSDs will use the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface and feature a standard 2.5-inch form factor which makes them compatible with most notebooks and desktops available out there.

“The Patriot Wildfire is the fastest SSD drive we have ever released to the public,” says Les Henry, Patriot Memory's vice president of engineering.

“SandForce has done a fantastic job engineering the SF-2200 SSD processor and combined with our research and development, we are able to further tweak the design and maximize performance with the processor and our flash memory.”

At the end of last week, an OCZ Vertex 3 Pro solid state disk based on SandForce's second generation controller was put through its paces by a hardware review website and, as expected, the drive managed to surpass all of its competitors without breaking a sweat.

One of its best results came in the 4K random writes test where it managed to achieve 330MB/s, 67% better than its nearest competitor, which was stuck at 198.4MB/s.

Sequential read and write transfer speeds were also impressive as the SSD reached 381.3MB/s and 396.1MB/s, respectively.

The Patriot Wildfire series of SSDs will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities and, inside the retail package, users will find a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch mounting bracket for improved compatibility.

Just as the OCZ drive reviewed last week, the Patriot Wildfire is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2011.
