The development team at Other Ocean Interactive have announced that renowned actor Patrick Stewart is set to star in the upcoming War of the Worlds, the side scrolling platformer that will be based upon the work of H.G. Wells.

The game is set to be launched via download only on the Xbox Live Arcade service from Microsoft and on the PlayStation Network from Sony and will put the player in the two-dimensional skin of a commoner that needs to face an alien invasion in the London of the '50's.

The War of the Worlds video game will be launched before the end of 2011.

Patrick Stewart, who is has been nominated for both the Emmy prize and the Golden Globe, has stated, “As a young boy, I remember watching the The War of the Worlds so many times I was quoting the lines.”

He added, “The alien invasion both terrified and fascinated me and the movie has stuck with me since then. Now, being part of this project will provide a new way for gamers around the world to experience a fresh new take on a classic.”

Stewart has long been associated with geek culture, first by starring as the popular Captain Jean Luc Picard on The Next Generation, the reboot that made Star Trek popular again, and then by taking over the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the ongoing series of X-Men movies.

Patrick Stewart was also praised for his role in the Bethesda created The Elder Scrolls V: Oblivion.

Other Ocean Interactive says that it is inspired by the original H.G. Wells War of the Worlds play for its game but will introduce a new main character, new locations, a whole new narrative and a number of sub plots, all dealing with the alien invasion.

The game is inspired by classic titles like Flashback and Out of This World.
