PlayStation Portable owners should get ready for a brand new firmware update, as Sony will soon release a new version of the handheld console's software, version 6.35, in the following weeks.

According to the Japanese company, the new firmware is just a minor one, released in preparation for the upcoming launch of a new music service exclusive to Sony devices.

"This is a minor update that prepares your PSP system for the upcoming launch of “Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity” – a new, cloud-based, digital music service from Sony that will give music lovers access to millions of songs stored and synchronized through the cloud."

"A new icon for the service will be added to PSP’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) under the “Music” category."

Besides getting your handheld console ready for the new service, the Media Go application, which is used for managing PSP downloadable content on the PC, will also be updated with enhancements to the user interface and more advanced photo editing tools.

Mac users will still be left without a custom version of the Media Go, as Sony declined to reveal if such an edition will be released in the future.

Music Unlimited will allow Sony fans to stream their songs to any device made by the Japanese company, as long as you have an Internet connection.

The system is still in its early stages though, and after it will be launched for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3 users can expect it to arrive for their home console, joining other streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, which are already available for the PS3.

No date has been given about when this new firmware will be released, but Sony is confident that it will deploy it in the following weeks.

Users will receive a prompt about the new update when they connect their device to the Internet, and need to download and install this new firmware if they want to access the PlayStation Store or play games online.
