It's not clear if it really does something or just adds a few digits after the "2"

If you have your PlayStation 3 around you, this is the moment when you should (or, at least, could) download and install the newly released PS3 firmware update, the 2.17 version. The one before this has been launched about three months ago, back in December and since then we've heard nothing from Sony regarding the next one. Well, it seems that the time has come, since we now have the v2.17 secretly released by the giants.

Hopefully this is not a mistake or a wrong button pressed by somebody, since it seems that this new update... doesn't bring anything new. Also, no update notes are included this time, not even a quick note regarding the in-game XMB. Everything seems to be working as it did before, the marketplace didn't receive a facelift, time to get back to work. We'll let you know if we find out more stuff.

Until then, we can only be excited about about the planned and long awaited XMB which will most likely be available this summer and we can only hope that future updates will arrive with a changelog or at least something notable... Hopefully, the next big thing won't be the 3.0 one, because it seems like a lifetime waiting for it to be released. Anyway, don't hesitate to tell us if you managed to see what this update improved (if it actually improved or changed anything).

Update: Well, it seems that nobody at Sony pressed the wrong button, they really released a firmware update that doesn't actually bring anything you can really see or feel (or maybe I'm just being paranoid). According to the official PlayStation blog, "the operating stability of some online PS3 titles has been improved" by this update. So, nothing as exciting as we thought it would be, moving on, waiting for the next firmware update.
