Owning a dishwasher does have its benefits. However, specialists warn that, contrary to expectations, most of these household appliances are not all that clean.

In fact, investigations have revealed that over 60% of the dishwashers that people own and use on a regular basis are teeming with dangerous fungi.

Writing in the journal Medical Mycology, the researchers explain that the fungi most commonly found inside dishwashers are Exophiala, Rhodotorula and Candida parapsilosis, Daily Mail reports.

These species of fungi represent a threat to public health. More precisely, they can cause the people who come in contact with them to develop lung problems and even skin infections.

Those who have a weak immune system are the ones most likely to be affected by them.

The specialists recommend that people who own a dishwasher take the time to give it a thorough scrub at least once a month.
