Openwave Systems announced the Openwave Mobile Widget solution, designed to simplify access to and discovery of highly personalized content. The AJAX-based solution, based on the Openwave MIDAS application development environment, enables mobile widgets to be integrated directly into the mobile device's idle screen and run on diverse mobile platforms.

"In the PC world, widgets have already gained notoriety with content providers and consumers alike as a simple, easy way to access information. The opportunity is now extending the benefit of these lightweight applications into the mobile market and leveraging their presence on the mobile phone idle screen as a way to drive increased service adoption," said Peter Galvin, senior vice president of products and marketing, Openwave. "Today, most applications are buried deep within a catalog of services. At Openwave, our mobile widget solution - combined with recently announced solutions like Openwave MediaCast - is designed to break down the current barriers to service adoption with an intuitive user experience that pushes relevant content and allows users to customize their experience."

The Openwave Mobile Widget solution includes optional, customizable components which facilitate access to Internet-based services, including: search, sports, stocks, weather, RSS reader, quick launch bar, widget manager and theme manager. Each component can be integrated with the device's idle screen and can be "pushed" or "pulled" onto devices by either the mobile operator or the consumer. The simple nature of widget creation enables operators and content developers to react quickly to market trends and evaluate new widget-based services with minimal investment. The solution also includes the Openwave Mobile AJAX Software Developer Kit, which includes tools to rapidly create and easily develop widgets.

The Openwave Mobile Widget solution is optimized for use with Openwave MediaCast, a second-generation content delivery and merchandising system for mobile operators that is designed to enable easy access to and discovery of highly personalized content as well as the Openwave Personalization and Profiling System, which can serve as the foundation to deliver personalized applications and services to individual consumers.
