No FF XI for the Nintendo Wii, yet

Final Fantasy XI was a hit back in the days when it surfaced, being the first MMO in the series, a serious rival for World of Warcraft, but also a disappointment for the fans of the previous single player masterpieces. We've seen the title surfacing on the PC, Xbox 360 and the PS2, but according to the FF XI producer, Hiromichi Tanaka, we won't see a Wii port of the title.

Such a decision was blamed on the Wii's resolution differences and the fact that Nintendo doesn't yet allow the development of cross-platform titles. I guess that Nintendo's best selling console would have taken full advantage of its online capabilities thanks to a Final Fantasy MMO, but Square-Enix are ready to work with the Wii for now.

The lack of a hard drive was also mentioned as reason for not porting the online FF title and there's also a pretty obvious reason in the background: the Wii's controls are not fit for a MMORPG. In case you're the owner of the above-mentioned console and a fan of Square-Enix's RPG, you shouldn't feel disappointed by the announcement, as developing a Wii online FF is technically possible, but only if Nintendo's hit gaming device receives a hard drive.

Tanaka also said that he has been secretly working on a new MMO project, developed for the PS3 and PC, but we've got not details about it yet. Could it be Final Fantasy XIV, another MMO to make half of the fanbase go "Boo!" and the other half go "Woo-hoo!"? Since I'm not much of a fan of the eleventh title in the series and FF-based MMO games, I would much rather enjoy a single player Final Fantasy game created specially for the Wii, in order to fit its control system.
