Olympus has recently updated its popular line of PEN interchangeable lens cameras to feature three new models that all carry similar specs and were designed to cater to the needs of both hobbyists and advanced photographers alike.

The news came as a bit of a surprise as everybody expected Olympus to release just the E-PM1 model, but this was also accompanied by the PEN E-P3 and E-PL3.

Despite the different designations, all the three models are based on the same Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensors with a resolution of 12.3 megapixel which were paired together with TruePic VI image processors that enable the PEN cameras to reach an ISO ceiling of 12,800.

The autofocus system was also reengineered in order to offer a faster response (Olympus actually calls the E-P3 “the world's fastest autofocus”), and this is accompanied by a new 1080i Full HD video mode.

The rest of the features that made their way into the new PEN series include a redesigned interface as well as a variety of in-camera Art Filters.

As far as the differences between the three new Olympus cameras are concerned, the E-P3 comes as the most feature rich model as it sports an all-metal body and a 614,000 pixel OLED touchscreen, while the E-PL3 takes it down a notch with its 3-inch tilting LCD.

The most simple of the three devices, the E-PM1, is the lightest and smallest camera in the PEN line and features a new and simplified user interface as well as a streamlined button structure.

“With a classic, compact, all-metal body reminiscent of the Olympus PEN E-P1, the PEN E-P3 offers an unprecedented level of portability to help you capture great images and videos on the go,” said Katie Roseman, senior product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.

“This camera has the creative flexibility to give you a true professional experience,” concluded the company's rep.

Sadly, only the PEN E-P3 has been priced, and this will be available starting from August in a kit form with the MSC M. Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f2.8 prime lens at a $899.99 recommended retail price.
