OWC released many a storage and memory product over the years, being even one of the main suppliers of SSD upgrades for Apple Mac systems, though its recent announcement speaks of a software product instead of more hardware.

Having already, recently, unveiled new DDR3 RAM (random access memory) and solid state drives, OWC could be said to have enough cause to take a break from showing any new item.

Whether it feels the same or not is yet unclear, but OWC did speak of something besides hardware in its new press release.

More specifically, Other World Computing launched a new, Mac-compatible firmware for its Mercury Solid State Drive models.

“We continue to see solid growth of SandForce Driven SSD installations in the Apple Mac community, and a native Mac-based firmware upgrade solution has been highly desired for this expanding market,” said Jeremy Werner, director of Marketing at SandForce.

“This new firmware update solution by OWC will be well received by their users.”

The firmware comes with a special updater which is fully bootable and does not need a PC or any machine running Windows, nor a special drive partition.

All it takes is to download the firmware form OWC's website (for free) and burn it on a DVD, which can then be used to boot the easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI).

“We devoted significant resources to provide users of OWC brand SSDs effective, user friendly firmware update solutions,” said Larry O’Connor, founder and CEO, Other World Computing.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer a Mac friendly experience expected by the Mac user community, while also providing standard upgrade packages for Windows and Linux Operating System users. Our development of this solution now ensures enhanced support and rapid releases in the future for the ongoing support of our full SSD line up, regardless of our customer’s preferred OS.”
